Action/Adventure, 76 x 25 minute episodes
Jim Bowie is a frontiersman pioneer from New Orleans, who travels to Texas during the days of strife following the Louisiana Purchase. Set in the Louisiana Territory around 1830, wealthy planter Jim Bowie encounters many famous people in New Orleans or the backwoods, relying for protection on the knife he supposedly invented after his regular one broke in a fight with a grizzly bear, his new Bowie Knife became his favorite weapon.
The setting for this series provided backdrops of French American New Orleans, and a backwoods setting. Bowie was a wealthy, young planter and adventurer, and his path crossed those of many interesting people, including his good friend John James Audubon (the naturalist painter), pirate Jean Lafitte, Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson, and even Johnny Appleseed.
In one episode, Jim ran for Congress against Davy Crockett. A young Michael Landon (who would soon be seen in Bonanza and later Little House on the Prairie) appeared in a 1956 episode.
The show was adapted from the book, Tempered Blade, by Monte Barrett.
